OVERVIEW The digital data preservation of Shain Libraries CDs and DVDs allowed for an additional 2,700 square feet to be included in the redesign of the Academic Resource Center (ARC). Aligned with the center’s overarching goals, the design aims to foster effective learning through a model that invites thoughtful, active, and engaged participation. Collaboration with faculty outside of the classroom is a key focus, intending to drive teaching styles and methods, advising, and academic assistance, tailoring approaches to meet the individual learning needs of all students.
CONCEPT Inspired by the established grid system formed by existing bookshelves, the redesign introduces a modular design that allows for flexibility, optimizing the flow of students within the library while enhancing the overall functionality of the ARC. Testing zones provide designated isolated areas for distraction-free exams. Office spaces are located in more public areas that act as extensions of the faculty’s office space to foster relationships and advance student learning capabilities. The primary collaboration zone, often referred to as the “dog bone,” is positioned at the heart of the ARC to encourage group work, discussion, and peer-to-peer learning. The Quantitative Analysis and Writing Center serve as dedicated spaces for consultations and workshops, fostering a collaborative and conducive atmosphere.
IMPACT Projected to be built in the summer of 2024, the ARC seeks to create a dynamic, student-centric space that aligns with contemporary academic needs of the Connecticut College community.
