OVERVIEW The Oddment Side Chair is an attempt to push the structural integrity of an everyday object in corrugated cardboard while embracing the unique characteristics and beauty in the form of the material. The shape of the design is inspired by the use of off-cuts, showcasing the potential of every piece.
CONCEPT The chair’s distinctive shape is the result of mirroring and distorting oddment shapes to create a self-supporting form. Through the process of horizontally stacking 250 sheets of cardboard to achieve the desired shape and thickness for a comfortable upright seating position, six variations of laser-cut templates were employed. The result is a blend of angles and curves that not only defy the limitations of the material but also provide an ergonomic and inviting seating experience. The depth of the seat allows for an even distribution of the user’s weight through their legs to promote an upright, 90-degree posture. The back of the chair extends only so far as to support the lumbar region alone. This positioning of the backplate allows for a malleable surface that supports the natural curve of the spine.
ASSEMBLY The interior sheets feature ¼” holes where wooden dowels were inserted. These dowels served as temporary supports during the assembly process, allowing for the precise alignment of the cardboard layers. Once the glue had dried, the dowels were removed, and the exterior faces were attached, leaving behind a seamless and robust construction.
